Intellectual Developmental Disorder (Intellectual Disability)
Intellectual developmental disorder, also known as intellectual disability, involves differences in both intellectual functioning and everyday adaptive skills, such as hygiene, problem-solving, communicating needs, and independent living skills. These differences begin during childhood and can occur for many reasons. Intellectual disability can affect learning and daily functioning across at home, school, and work.
Testing for intellectual disability is essential because there is a high risk of danger associated with this disorder. Children and adults with developmental disabilities may have a lower (or lack) of awareness of risk and danger, which can make them frequent targets for victimization. They are also more likely to experience accidental injury. Intellectually disabled individuals often have difficulty communicating about their needs, hard things that have happened to them, and their emotions. They may externalize their experiences through behavior that appears disruptive or aggressive to others. With the correct diagnosis, these individuals can not only stay safe but identify supports that allow them to thrive.
An evaluation provides a comprehensive understanding of an individual's strengths and support needs. This can help families/caregivers, schools, and providers develop appropriate services, interventions, and long-term planning. Testing for intellectual disability can also assist with access to resources such as an Independent Education Plan (IEP) or Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) services. Additionally, evaluation identifies the associated severity level (mild, moderate, severe, or profound).

What Does Intellectual Developmental Disorder Testing Involve?
1) Intake Appointment
Your assessment will begin with a clinical intake. This will involve a parent/caregiver clinical interview. We will gather comprehensive, trauma-informed background information and collaborate with you to determine goals for testing. We will also review records from childhood wherever possible to establish a well rounded clinical picture.
2) Testing Appointment
A typical assessment will include
3-6 hours of face-to-face comprehensive testing. This includes cognitive and adaptive functioning tests, self- and other- report measures, and other assessments specific to your presenting concerns.
We do not use psychometricians. All of your testing time will be directly with our doctoral-level clinicians.
3) Feedback Session
Two weeks after your testing appointment, we will provide a feedback session to discuss the results of your assessment. Diagnoses and recommendations will be provided and you will have the opportunity to process your results and ask questions.
4) Report and Ongoing Support
After your feedback session, you will be provided with a thorough written report. This details the testing received, results, diagnoses, and recommendations. It is often used to support access to accommodations and to guide treatment planning.
Our experts remain available to you for follow-up questions, support, and advocacy as needed.
Thank you for trusting us with your care
